Miss Stanley-Drummond is stopping in Milan for a short stay on her way to the warmer south. But before leaving the railway station she encounters a young woman all alone, Effie Robertson, who has not been met by her mother as planned. Miss Drummond invites Effie to stay with her at the hotel while she awaits her mother and new stepfather.
After the mother and her new husband arrive, Miss Drummond observes closely the shifty stepfather and becomes aware of his plans for Effie. Since the mother seems unwilling to intercede on Effie's behalf, it will be up to Miss Drummond to save the day.
