The Story

At age 19 Janet Summerhayes is a pretty girl with an "innate sweetness of disposition" who is well liked in the little village of Clover. She had been raised by a relation with affection, but perhaps not real love; and now that Aunt Mary has died Janet must go into the world as a governess. This story follows her first steps in this direction - though an alternative plan is also proposed.

Biographical and other notes

The story refers to little dances in the "neighbourhood of Dinglefield" rather than in the neighbourhood of Clover. It is possible this story was originally meant to occur at Dinglefield Green (the village in the Neighbours on the Green series).
