The Story

John Percival, though at present only a clerk in his uncle's Edinburgh bank, is looked to as his uncle's probable heir. As he learns banking from the ground up he is sent on a year's assignment to the business's branch in Duntrum. Even before arriving he is caught up in a matter indirectly affecting the bank, when he encounters a strange old lady with toothache - who robs the mail off the coach! Later during a lively social winter in Duntrum, John meets a witty girl who may hold the key to the mystery.

Biographical and other notes

The fictional town of Duntrum appears to be based on the town of Dumfries.
