The nouveaux riches make their appearance at Dinglefield Green when a rich young City man settles on the Green with his family. Though the Greshams lack delicacy and tact, they make up for it with their friendliness and lavish hospitality. And Mrs Mulgrave's young friend Lottie Stoke is developing feelings for Mr Gresham's brother Gerald. Then at one of the Greshams' grand parties a telegram triggers a series of events, and Mrs Mulgrave must step in to save appearances and provide support to young Mrs Gresham.
